A General Method For Applying The Golden Rule

By Rev. Bill McGinnis, Chairman

Committee For The Golden Rule

"TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE TREATED."

"Treat others as you would like to be treated." This is The Golden Rule, expressed in a universal English form which does not favor any particular religion or philosophy.

It is the most suitable standard for all interpersonal behavior, spiritually correct and acceptable to all people.

Although it is a central doctrine to Christianity, it is also acceptable and useful to people of all religious beliefs, even Atheists, whose belief about God is that He does not exist.

So how do we apply the Golden Rule? How do we actually put it into practice in our lives? Here's how:

In all situations, we mentally change places with the other person, putting ourself into his position. Then we see and feel how we would like to be treated if we were in his position. Then, we treat him this way.

If other people would also be affected by our actions, we need to consider each of them (including ourself!) in the same way, and act accordingly. So The Golden Rule needs to be applied broadly, to consider all people who would be affected by our actions, not just the person immediately before us.

We can quickly see that the Golden Rule always boils down to being a rule of sympathy and love for others, in harmony with the doctrine "Love all others as you love yourself." If any application of the Golden Rule seems to

That's it! That's how to apply the Golden Rule. There is no need to go through extended mental acrobatics to understand it. It is simple and easy to apply, if you have the desire to do so.

Here are three examples:

(1) HELP IS NEEDED - We are driving down the road, safe and sound in our car, which is running fine. We see a car stopped by the side of the road with its hood up, with a white flag of some sort tied to its radio antenna. The driver is inside. What do we do?

Putting ourselves in his position, we imagine what we would like to have happen. We would probably like to have someone stop and help us. So we stop and help him!

(2) HARM IS DONE ACCIDENTALLY - We are minding our own business, walking down the street carrying a bag of groceries. Someone carelessly bumps into us, knocking the bag out of our hands and spilling the groceries, damaging some items. They apologize immediately and begin helping us pick up the items on the ground. What do we do?

Putting ourselves in his position, we imagine what we would like to have happen. We would probably like for the offended person to accept our apology and continue on his way, without making any trouble. So we accept his apology, then continue on our way without making any trouble. <3> HARM IS DONE, ON PURPOSE - Some evil person deliberately and maliciously scrapes a rock along the side of our parked car, damaging the paint. Five of our bodybuilder friends capture this person and bring him to us, helpless. What do we do?

Putting ourselves in his position, we imagine what we would like to have happen. We would probably like to be let off with a stern admonition, without being beaten up or killed or put in jail. So we let him off, with a stern adminition. We do not beat him up or put him in jail.
